🔐 Bitcoin Self-Custody Guide
The most important principle in Bitcoin: "Not your keys, not your coins."
When you hold BTC on an exchange, you don't actually own Bitcoin — you own an IOU from that exchange. True Bitcoin ownership means controlling your private keys yourself.
⚠️ Critical Warning: Your seed phrase IS your Bitcoin. If you lose it, your Bitcoin is gone forever. If someone else gets it, they own your Bitcoin. Treat it like a nuclear launch code.
Types of Wallets
Hot Wallets (Software) — For Small Amounts Only
- BlueWallet — Mobile, beginner-friendly, open source
- Sparrow Wallet — Desktop, advanced features, privacy-focused
- Electrum — Veteran desktop wallet, lightweight, reliable
Hot wallets are connected to the internet, making them convenient for spending but vulnerable to hacking. Use only for amounts you're willing to lose.
Cold Wallets (Hardware) — RECOMMENDED for Significant Holdings
- Ledger Nano X / S Plus — Most popular, wide coin support, ~$60-80
- Trezor Model T / Safe 3 — Open source, privacy-focused, ~$200+
- Coldcard — Bitcoin-only, maximum security, ~$150-200
- Blockstream Jade — Open source, Bitcoin-only, affordable (~$50)
Hardware wallets store your private keys offline on a physical device, protecting them from online attacks. The gold standard of Bitcoin security.
✅ Best Practice: If you hold more than a few thousand dollars in Bitcoin, use a hardware wallet. The security benefit far outweighs the $50-200 cost.
Setup Steps (Hardware Wallet)
- Purchase from official manufacturer site ONLY — Never Amazon, eBay, or third-party resellers. Risk of tampering.
- Initialize the device — Follow the official setup wizard on the device itself.
- Write down your seed phrase — The device will show you 12 or 24 words. Write them down by hand.
- Store seed phrase on metal — Use Cryptosteel or similar metal backup, NOT paper. Metal is fireproof and waterproof.
- NEVER photograph or digitize your seed phrase — Don't email it, cloud it, or take a photo. Ever.
- Test recovery before loading funds — Use a small test amount to verify your seed works.
- Send small test transaction first — Before moving all your Bitcoin, test with a small amount.
The Seed Phrase: Your Bitcoin Is Here
- 12 or 24 words that ARE your Bitcoin
- Whoever has these words controls your funds
- Store in 2+ physical locations — Consider a safe deposit box + home safe
- Metal backup (Cryptosteel, Bilodeau) — Essential for long-term preservation
- Never share with anyone — Not family, not advisors, not AI chatbots
⚠️ Seed Phrase Safety: If someone accesses your seed phrase, they own your Bitcoin and you cannot recover it. There is no customer support, no chargebacks, no refunds in Bitcoin.
Common Custody Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Storing seed phrase digitally (cloud, email, photo, text file)
- ❌ Buying hardware wallet from Amazon (risk of pre-loaded malware)
- ❌ Not testing the recovery process before loading significant funds
- ❌ Storing all wealth in one location (fire, theft, natural disaster)
- ❌ Sharing wallet info with family/friends
- ❌ Using a hardware wallet with custom firmware from unofficial sources
- ❌ Trusting a single backup of your seed phrase
- ❌ Reusing the same seed phrase across multiple devices
Multi-Signature Wallets (Advanced)
For very large holdings (100+ BTC), consider a multi-signature setup:
- Requires 2 of 3 (or 3 of 5, etc.) hardware wallets to authorize transactions
- Significantly reduces theft risk — an attacker needs access to multiple devices
- More complex to set up, but extremely secure
- Examples: Casa, Unchained, DIY with Specter/Caravan
The Philosophy: Sovereignty Over Convenience
Bitcoin exists to give you financial sovereignty — the ability to hold and move your wealth without permission from banks, governments, or corporations.
Self-custody is the ultimate expression of this sovereignty. Yes, it requires responsibility. But the alternative — trusting an exchange to hold your Bitcoin — means you never truly own it.
Time in market beats timing the market. Self-custody beats custodial exchanges.
